The board book is pretty sturdy, so it should withstand plenty of readings. The illustrations are surprisingly detailed for their style. The text flows nicely; it has a good rhythm. There are a lot of things to talk about here: a hat that flies off, a cow who moos at Thomas as Thomas peeps back, and a dog beside the tracks. The fact that the whole story is about Thomas taking a judge to a train show means that a great variety of engines appear at the end, and Harvey shows up on an earlier page.

If you are bothered by the use of “slow” (as opposed to “slowly”) as an adverb, you might want to skip this one. Thomas “goes slow” repeatedly.

Additional note: I didn’t realize that the board book was an abridged version of Go, Train, Go! until my son got the full version for Christmas. The two books have very different rhythms, and the full version has quite a few more pages. There’s even a goat in the longer book, but there’s no goat in the board book. Initially, I liked the rhythm of the board book better, but the other version is growing on me.

This book has a great flow/rhythm to it. My little one has memorized many of the phases. It’s a nice short read with plenty of opportunity to animate your voice for extra enjoyment.

My daugher (18 months) loves this book. She even refers to it as the “go” book. I like to read it by mimicking the speed of the text. I slow down when it says “slow slow slow” and I read it fast when the train is moving fast. From an adult’s perspective, I would have preferred it to be written better, but it’s fine for a child. However, I don’t think it necessarily teaches bad grammar.

Now that I know this is the abridged version, I’ll have to look for the full version. That probably explains why the story seems incomplete (especially at the end).

I love these little Thomas books. For a minimal price you can add to your child’s library and foster a love of reading.

In this Thomas and Friends story, the Steamies and the Diesels learn that they need to get along if they are going to be `really useful engines’.

Summer has come to Sodor along with an ambitious plan of construction. Pleased with the completion of the new Sodor suspension bridge, Sir Topham Hatt announces that he needs all the engines to help build an airport to bring in the all important tourist trade.

Everything starts out well, but soon the Steamies and the Diesels are at cross purposes. As the author writes, “[T]he diesels bumped Thomas and biffed Percy.” And [s]oon the diesels and the Steamies were biffing and banging and being bashed all over the island.”

And if that was not bad enough a bad hurricane sweeps over the island causing great damage so that not only do they need to keep working on the airport, but they need to rebuild and clean up at other locations.

Considering all the biffing and bashing that doesn’t seem likely and all seems lost until Thomas has a dream in which he sees Lady working side by side with Rusty (a diesel). Lady tells him in the dream that “[W]e always finish our jobs when we work together. This makes up Thomas’ mind and he approaches Mavis (one of the nice diesels, like Salty) with the idea of putting aside *all* of the arguments so that they can *all* be really useful engines.

Word gets round and soon everyone is working hard and pulling together.

Five Stars. Good read-aloud. This book is particularly popular in our home because of the many different engines that are pictured.

The next morning when Thomas woke up, he had an idea.

First he went straight to see Mavis. Mavis was a kind diesel

engine, and Thomas knew she would listen. He told Mavis that

he wanted the steam engines and the diesels to work together.

Mavis agreed… it was the only way to get the airport open in time.

“Let’s have a big meeting with al of the engines at the coaling

Stop tomorrow,” Thomas puffed.

Another great little Thomas book — nothing controversial in this story, it’s all about teamwork and resolving conflict.

My son likes this book because Thomas gets splattered with paint. This book goes well with Take Along Thomas Paint Car. If you are looking for a nice gift, buy both.

This is definitely one of the best of the Thomas books. It is by the original author and has a message about working together. The steamies and the diesels are fighting, and no work gets done, so Thomas calls a meeting and they all work together. Even Diesel 10 chips in. Enjoy reading it 10 million times. . .
