We love to look back to our sweet old memories, free without too much responsibility. The first taste of independence and fun seem to be the greatest things of all in our lives. When we get older, we gradually have more work and responsibilities that make us too busy to enjoy life.

You don’t necessarily remember the hurt and pain being a teenager, how you were once unsure about who you were. The smallest thing will put a frown on your face, be it an acne, or a friend of the opposite sex. There was so much stress trying to get accepted by peers at school. Now if I may, let me take you down the lane to re-explore how unworthy those times were.

1) Spots. It has for sure crossed your mind how you would spend your night with a boy or girl you met at a weekend party. What was so disturbing was to wake up the day after and have them look at your face in bright daylight. Oops, the harsh reality says: looks do matter. Pimpled face is definitely not a turn-on, though the boy or girl of your dreams may as well be troubled by the same thing.

2) Growth Spurts. For some, growing means undergoing a painful process, as for others, they would rather have that pain than not grow at all. You were once so envious of people who were so much taller and stronger, but as you aged, you know life is fair. Those girls who had the ‘head start’ in development suffered most from stretch marks later on in their lives.

3) Parents. You swore to be a cool parent when you were younger, or at least appear to be less manipulating and more hip. Now that you are one, or maybe going to become one, you must admit that there are no exceptions. It’s easier said than done.

4) Cars. No surprise that Lamborghini is your dream car, you can go on to dream about that while you drive your shabby Ford. There is a slim chance that girls would look your way. They usually prefer older men with posh vehicles. Now, you can race the bus instead!

5) Sex. Although you really want it and think about it very often, you are not going to have one. In fact, it does not really affect your adulthood.

Instead of reminiscing all the excitement you have had when your hair was still dark, focus on how you are feeling. ‘You are as young as you feel’. All the years that went by only make you a more sophisticated and wise person, so treasure the process of growing old.

As mentioned in the Bible, strength is the glory of a young man while it is experience for an old man. Old is relative in today’s community, especially norm is the living to a ripe old age. For example, when you are about fifteen, you might think that old was about 30. Therefore, when I say listen to your elders, it probably means someone around 30 years old. However, I think the most valuable beginning of life is around the mid 40.

Let’s turn the clock back, during your childhood, the older you were, the smarter and more mature you thought you were. Like, when you were ten, you would think you know more about when you were five. And when you were twelve, you strongly believed you learnt more than when you were ten. With time passed by, you would know more and gain more experience.

Another will say “When you reached 15, you better leave home since you know everything.”. It applied to all of us. Think about this, no matter what age you are, you can look back and say something like, “if I knew then what I know now,” which means with a little knowledge you could have made something difference. Age comes wisdom, wise person knows that they don’t really know everything, and they know they need to keep improving themselves.

I love listening to wise old people. They are wise because they have experiences which could not gain from books. The inherit wisdom of old women is not written down. It comes from the advice of the older ones, who could teach us better ways to do things like toilet training or weening from the bottle.

What should we listen to from old women? We should listen to their advice on raising children, how to maintain a good relationship with husbands, choices of our career, how to get along with our peers, etc. Older women who have failed are the best to give advice, because they can see the mistakes that they made and give us vicarious advice.

Just like if a woman failed at her marriage, she may know what mistakes she did when she looked back. Therefore she can act as a model to teach not to do those mistakes in your life. Moreover, if a woman raised a child unsuccessfully, her failure will also be treated as a piece of precious advice to you.

What about old man advices? Man loves successfully story only. Suppose there is an old man who damaged his family, friends, and even child. Do you think you should still listen to his advices? Will you convince yourself to trust him if he told you not to be?

Well, suppose there is an old man who didn’t spend enough to his kids and failed to feed them to be a responsible adults. If he advise you not to live for his life, should you listen? I heard a pop start saying about his regret. He mentioned he really wished he had treated his wife and children differently. I think if someone really regret for his past, you really have to take their advise and try not repeating anymore. The passage is written from an old man and I hope you could learn something from it.
